The Woman’s Place

  The Wrong Kind Of Woman

                               By: General Deborah Green

“HEAR THIS WORD, you cows (women) of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, Bring, and let us drink! The LORD has sworn by His holiness, that behold, the days shall come upon you, when they shall take you away with hooks, and the last of you with fishhooks. And you shall go out through the breaches (made in the city’s wall), every woman straight before her, and you shall be cast forth into Harmon (an unknown place of exile), says the LORD” (Amos 4:1-3).

As we can see here, the Lord has an indictment against these women who are oppressing the poor, crushing the needy and saying to their husbands, “Bring and let us drink!” Why is God against these women? Because they are not allowing the compassion of God to move through them. Instead, they are hardened through their idolatries and their lusts, and they cannot really be satisfied. In their quest for acquisition of materialism, they do not care about oppressing the poor and crushing the needy, but rather they make it their practice.

Many women will have a rude awakening when they stand before God, for they have hidden behind their husbands and been guilty of much evil and wickedness in the sight of the Lord. Just because I call myself by the “Mrs.” title, does not mean that I have no accountability before God. As you will notice in this portion of Scripture, the Lord is holding these women accountable before Him, and He is having the prophet to cry out against them because they are the ones who are liable in His judgment.

“Rise up, you women who are at ease! Hear my (Isaiah’s) voice, you confident and careless daughters, listen to what I am saying. In little more than a year you shall be shaken with anxiety, you careless and complacent women, for the vintage will fail and the ingathering shall not come. Tremble, you women who are at ease! Shudder with fear, you complacent ones! Strip yourselves bare and gird sackcloth upon your loins in grief! They shall beat upon their breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine, for the land of my people growing up with thorns and briars; yes for all the houses of joy in the joyous city” (Isaiah 32:9-11)

God here is using the prophet Isaiah to warn the women, the women who are at ease. He is giving forth the warning against these women who are careless and confident, for the wrath of God is coming upon them to take away from them all of the pleasant living they have been used to.

We are living in a time in history when women have more luxury, more leisure time, more money, more convenience, more education—and less hardship, less work, less oppression, fewer children and the responsibilities of managing their households than at any time in history. Women are at ease, they have time to be confident and careless, sure that their lot in life will go on forever.

The shame is upon the Christian women who are accountable before God for what they do with their time, what they do with their money, how they raise their children, and what they do for Him. In this time of women at ease, fewer women are involved full-time or even part-time in the true Gospel work (not the Jezebel-run whorehouses called churches) than at any other time in history. Women have stopped laboring for God. Could it be that they have it so good, or so they think, that they no longer fear God nor desire to please Him?

As women, our place has never changed with reference to the Lord and His Kingdom. We are meant to be His handmaidens as much now as at any other time in history. But instead of laboring for the Lord, most women are laboring for the materialism money-god, pouring themselves out in oblation to the gods of stuff and things, without any remembering that they are meant to be serving the Lord all of their days.

Christian women who are at ease in your confidence, the Lord is holding you accountable for the times wasted, the vows never kept, the hardness of heart caused by your driving ambition and lust for the things of the world, degrees, and positions over men. He is holding you accountable for never witnessing to anyone, not even your own children. He is holding you accountable for the countless hours you spend in gossip, and in complaining, and in frivolity and vanity. Yes, in this generation, the women are going to receive, and already are receiving, the Lord’s judgment against them, because they have dwelt in careless ease, they have lived in luxury and laziness, they have sought for the things of the world and neglected God. They have hidden behind their husbands in order to avoid accountability before God, and God holds them accountable nonetheless.

There is no reason, no escape, and no justification for failure to serve the Lord as His handmaids. Our grandmothers and great grandmothers were troopers in the field of battle for human souls; they still managed to wash by hand, to rear children with next to nothing, to educate them, to chop wood and haul water and still preach the truth of Jesus Christ to any and all souls who would listen.

The call, the commission of God, remains . . . and He is still calling forth the soldiers, to battle for the human souls who are perishing in sin. Will you rescue the perishing, which is your duty? or will you convince yourself that you are okay while you live in ease, confidence, and crush the poor and needy because you are greedy? THE WOMAN’S PLACE REMAINS THE SAME IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD: LABORING WITHOUT CEASING FOR THE MASTER.
